Prime Minister Gordon Brown is wrong in his claims that the Afghanistan war prevents terrorism and former British foriegn office Minister Kim Howells MP (despite his failings on almost everything else) is right that having troops in Afghanistan doesn’t prevent Al Qa’ida training elsewhere; they trained in the US and Germany for 9-11 and the 1993 World trade center bombing. Howells misses out a lot though; that Obama’s expansion of the wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan has actually killed more civilians as well as more of our troops, both directly and by creating waves of suicide bombings like those in Iraq after Bush’s offensives there; that NATO operations in Afghanistan actually make terrorist attacks on NATO countries more likely, just as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars led to the London and Madrid bombings. The intensification of Pakistan’s civil war by Obama’s wars in Pakistan and Afghanistan could also create the crisis they’re meant to prevent by creating enough chaos to let Al Qaeda get hold of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.

| The forest is a complex ecosystem consisting mainly of trees that buffer the earth and support a myriad of life forms. The trees help create a special environment which, in turn, affects the kinds of animals and plants that can exist in the forest. Trees are an important component of the environment. They clean the air, cool it on hot days, conserve heat at night, and act as excellent sound absorbers. |
Fodder - Fodder from the forest forms an important source for cattle and other grazing animals in the hilly and the arid regions and during a drought. There are many varieties of grasses, trees, and shrubs that are nutritious for the livestock.
Fencing - Fences created with trees and shrubs are preferred in developing countries as they are cheap to maintain yet give protection
Soil erosion check - Tree roots bind the soil and prevent erosion caused by wind or water
Soil improvement - Some species of trees have the ability to return nitrogen to the soil through root decomposition or fallen leaves
Greenpeace showcases the solution to Indonesia’s rapid forest destruction and rising carbon emissions
INDONESIA - Jakarta, October 31 - Greenpeace this morning launched its “Forests for Climate” initiative, the pioneering solution to reduce deforestation, tackle climate change, preserve global biodiversity and protect the livelihoods of millions of forest people.
Forests for Climate (FFC) is Greenpeace’s landmark proposal for an international mechanism to fund sustainable and lasting reductions of emissions from tropical deforestation in participating countries in order to meet commitments for the second phase of the Kyoto Protocol (post 2012).
Taking the first step to match donor countries to real projects in developing forested countries, Greenpeace invited embassies of key donor countries, donor agencies, government officials and governors of several Indonesian provinces, to talk about the FFC initiative and to support a moratorium on any new forest conversion in Indonesia prior to any carbon money flowing.
The well-attended launch took place at Tanjung Priok, Jakarta’s port area, at an event jointly hosted by Rachmat Witoelar, State Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia. “Indonesia’s rampant deforestation and fast rising greenhouse gas emissions have been driven by the lure of short term profit. Greenpeace’s Forests for Climate mechanism is the solution as it places a value on keeping the forests alive”, said Arief Wicaksono, Political Advisor, Greenpeace Southeast Asia.
Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen has showed her interest in the environment before, first with a campaign that showed her wearing a water dress inviting to conserve this resource, and later with the launch of her own green blog.
Now she's back for the latest campaign of her Ipanema flip flop line, this time in a forest outfit with the aim to raise awareness on atlantic deforestation and supporting the well respected organization SOS Mata Atlantica.
How do you plant trees by selling flip flops? Found out after the jump.
Gisele Bündchen's Flip Flop Line Supporting Forest Recovery
Bündchen began designing a line of rubber sandals for the brand Ipanema last year, the first collection launched with a commented ad campaign that showed her wearing a water dress and raising awareness about conscious use of water.
For the second collection of her line, the model has chosen to support the well know organization SOS Mata Atlantica, which watches out the remaining Mata Atlantica or Atlantic Forest in Brazil. More specifically, she's supporting the program Forests of the Future, which seeks to recover gallery forest, the vegetation that surrounds rivers and streams participating in the protection of water.
| An Exposure can be defined as a Contracted, Projected or Contingent Cash Flow whose magnitude is not certain at the moment. The magnitude depends on the value of variables such as Foreign Exchange rates and Interest rates. | |
| The company will determine and analyse its Foreign Exchange exposures. | |
| Determination: The following cash flows/ transactions will be considered for the purpose of exposure management. | |
| Variable / Cash Flows | Transaction Type |
|
|
- Cash Flows above $100,000/- in value will be brought to the notice of the Exposure Manager, as soon as they are projected.
- It is the responsibility of the Exposure Manager to ensure that he receives the requisite information on exposures from various sections of the company in time.
These exposures will be analysed and the following aspects will be studied:
- Foreign Currency Cash Flows/ Schedules
- Variability of Cashflows - how certain are the amounts and/ or value dates?
- Inflow-Outflow Mismatches / Gaps
- Time Mismatches / Gaps
- Currency Portfolio Mix
- Floating / Fixed Interest Rate ratio
This section addresses the task of managing exposure to Foreign Exchange movements.
These Risk Management Guidelines are primarily an enunciation of some good and prudent practices in exposure management. They have to be understood, and slowly internalised and customised so that they yield positive benefits to the company over time.
It is imperative and advisable for the Apex Management to both be aware of these practices and approve them as a policy. Once that is done, it becomes easier for the Exposure Managers to get along efficiently with their task.
