Britain is backing a plan to cut down NATO’s commando structure, which is being put forward at the NATO summit in Lisbon.
The cuts are designed to mirror savings being made in the UK defence budget, and in other countries.
Among the proposals are a cut in personnel from 13,000 to 9,000, fewer NATO headquarters and a streamlining of support agencies, which cover training and research within NATO.
The cuts could save millions of pounds from the contribution the UK currently makes to the running of NATO.
The summit is also expected to hold discussions on Afghanistan, with senior figures drawing up a framework for the withdrawal of combat troops from the country.
